National NBC crews have been all over Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools the past two weeks, filming segments for 'Education Nation', a week-long look at public education in America.

Tryon Hills Pre-K Center was the setting for NBC's look into the importance of early education. The crew observed two classes, then spoke with teachers and students about how having a Pre-K foundation can support a child's education.

This past week, an NBC crew got a first-hand look into the life of fourth-grade Sterling Elementary student Jevón Dixon. While at Sterling, NBC interviewed some of the outstanding teachers who are making a difference in the lives of students. Sterling has been noted as an excellent example of a Turnaround School and recently hosted a round table discussion with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

NBC's day at Sterling will be featured Sunday, Sept. 26 on the Today Show from 8-9 a.m., during NBC's Town Hall meeting on MSNBC cable channel 50 at noon, and on NBC Nightly News at 6:30 p.m. Tryon Hills' students and teachers make their debut later in the week. At the time of this email, NBC was unable to confirm specific dates and times.

Throughout, he’s accompanied by John Legend on the keys and Dame playing the supporting role, along with brief guest spots from GLC and Miri Ben-Ari. Clocking in at seventy minutes long and worth the time spent watching it because the performance exposes the raw, more intimate performance side of Mr. West and his music, the parts that are often forgotten or overlooked.

The Bobby Lutz era with the Charlotte 49ers is over.

Lutz, the longest serving and winningest coach in school history, was fired Monday after his team failed to make postseason play for the second consecutive season.

"I think if you look at the numbers in our conference, wins and losses, we're below .500 and (this decision) has a lot to do with success on the court," said 49ers athletics director Judy Rose.

"At some point you ask how long do you think you can stand before you make a change and go in a little different direction?"

Lutz, a Charlotte graduate, is 218-158 in 12 seasons as head coach of the 49ers. He is 399-249 overall, including a stint as head coach at Division II Pfeiffer.

The 49ers, beset by injuries and a last-minute transfer, finished 11-20 last year but bounced back and started this season 18-5 and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Charlotte lost seven of its last eight games, finishing 19-12 and failed to make the postseason.

In the past five seasons, the 49ers are 43-44 in conference play, including A-10 tournament games.

"It's disappointing because as I said when I took this job I hoped to finish my career here and perhaps I have," said Lutz, 51. "Every coach in America serves at the pleasure of the administration and I respect that.

"It has been my pleasure and privilege to be the head coach at Charlotte. It's been an unbelievable journey, a dream come true."

Lutz said he was not bitter with the outcome.

"I've been here 15 years. I've been very blessed to be at a place that I love this long," he said. "Honestly, professionally, I probably made some poor choices by not going after some other jobs when they came after me.

"I don't regret it. I don't regret not leaving or pursuing other jobs because this is where I wanted to be."

During his tenure, Charlotte twice advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament and made five NCAA appearances and three trips to the National Invitation Tournament.

Lutz arrived in 1995 and spent three seasons an assistant under former 49ers coaches Jeff Mullins and Melvin Watkins. He was promoted to head coach when Watkins left at the end of the 1997-98 season to take a job at Texas A&M.

"We haven't been in the NCAA tournament since 2004-05, that's a pretty long drought," Rose said. "Before that, we were going fairly regularly.

"Do I expect us to go every year? No. It is the level of expectation that we get there on somewhat of a regular basis."

Lutz still had four years remaining on his contract, which went through the 2013-14 season. With a base salary of $237,000 per year, the school is obligated to pay Lutz $948,000 from non-state appropriated funds over the next four years.

Should Lutz obtain another coaching position, the amount owed by Charlotte could be lessened or eliminated depending on the base salary of his new position.

Rose said any buyout paid to Lutz would not affect the school's efforts to start up a football program.

Lutz's coaching staff was also released. Rob Perron, the director of basketball operations, will oversee the team while a search for a new coach continues.

Rose said a national search for Lutz's successor is already underway. She said she would not discuss specific candidates during the hiring process.

"We want high-energy level," Rose said. "We are book-ended by the ACC and the SEC and we know the challenges that creates in recruiting and scheduling.

"We got to have somebody that who will get in there and dig and work relentlessly to make it happen."

Think you know about Charlotte’s drinking water? Take a closer look…

Did you know: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, four of the country's forty-four high-hazard coal ash ponds are on the Catawba River, and Duke Energy owns them all. A high-hazard classification means "failure or misoperation will probably cause the loss of human life" in addition to catastrophic environmental and economic damage.

Did you know: In North Carolina alone, the (Catawba) river has 182 discharge permits, or licenses to pollute, all of which are up for renewal in 2010. One of those permits gives Duke Energy permission to drain water from two unlined, high-hazard coal ash ponds into Mountain Island Lake, the source of 80 percent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg's drinking water.

What is coal ash: In its raw form, coal ash -- the waste produced when coal is burned to create electricity -- looks and feels like black baby powder. To prevent the dust from contaminating the air, the ash is infused with water to weigh it down. It's then pumped into holding ponds, like the two behind Duke Energy's

Riverbend Steam Station, on the shore of Mountain Island Lake, where it stands for a few days, allowing gravity to pull the heavy waste particles to the bottom of the ponds before it drains into the lake.

A decade ago, the coal industry promised the EPA it would self-monitor groundwater near coal ash ponds in exchange for the agency not categorizing coal ash as hazardous waste, a move that would jack up the cost of disposal and, in turn, energy rates. However, since Duke Energy didn't begin monitoring the groundwater near Riverbend's unlined ponds until a little more than a year ago, it's impossible to know if the contamination is getting better or worse. Since the ponds aren't lined with plastic or any other barrier, there's nothing to prevent the toxic contaminants in the ash from seeping through the soil and into the water table.

The Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization in Washington D.C.,

reports coal ash is "replete with toxic constituents -- arsenic, chromium, lead, mercury, and many others -- that can wreak havoc on the environment and human health. Exposure to its toxins can lead to cancer, birth defects, gastro-intestinal illnesses, and reproductive problems."
An environmental group called Appalachian Voices analyzed a recent groundwater sample Duke Energy submitted to the government. The data reveal that the groundwater near all of North Carolina's thirteen coal ash ponds is contaminated with heavy metals and other pollutants "including but not limited to: arsenic, boron, cadmium, chloride, chromium, iron, lead, manganese, pH and sulfate." Neither the state nor Duke Energy has refuted the group's report.

Did you know: While [Mecklenburg] county also draws drinking water from Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake provides 80 percent of its water supply. Should the water in Mountain Island Lake be compromised, it's feasible Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities would not be able to provide enough clean drinking water to sustain the city since the water treatment plant on Lake Norman isn't large enough to process the amount of the water the county requires.

Although Gaston County has shared its contingency plan in the event of an environmental disaster on the Catawba River, (David) Merryman (Catawba Riverkeeper) says, "Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities has not been willing to produce a contingency plan to deal with the potential contamination of Mountain Island Lake in the event of a coal ash release of the type that recently happened in Tennessee."

Even if the ponds don't breach their earthen dams, Duke Energy, according to its own records, discharges more than a pound of arsenic, and other heavy metals, from the ponds into Mountain Island Lake daily. But the coal plant isn't violating any laws since its current discharge permits don't limit the amount of arsenic it's allowed to discharge into the lake.

On February 28, Duke Energy's Riverbend Steam Station's discharge permit is scheduled to expire. "At that time," says Merryman, "[the Department of Environment and Natural Resources] will make an important decision: protect our residents and their source of water from heavy-metal-laced discharges from coal ash ponds or continue ignoring the facts."

VH-1 Revisits Tupac & Biggie Murders

VH-1 will be the next outlet to take a stab and try and solve the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.

Launching their new half-hour series “Famous Crime Scene” on Friday, February 12th at 9 p.m., the first episode will take an in-depth look at the murders of Pac and Biggie which are still unsolved.

The additional six episodes will investigate the untimely deaths of Biggie Smalls, John Lennon, Anna Nicole Smith, Selena, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson.

Taking a different approach to the cases, VH-1 reveals while news accounts tell only part of the story, the network has rounded up the witnesses and investigators who were there to give viewers the intimate details from the initial 911 call to the investigators’ final determination to help piece together what really happened.

Using expert interviews and true-to-life reenactments, as well as advanced computer graphics, viewers will witness full recreations of these historic events. They’ll tour virtual crime scenes searching for clues and learn the science behind the investigators’ findings: ballistics, fingerprints, DNA evidence, toxicology, profiling and more.

Hip-Hop Wired also previously spoke with an O.G. who detailed that the murders of Tupac and Biggie was in fact gang related and had no ties to the East Coast / West Coast beef.

Ludacris is currently preparing his new “Battle Of The Sexes” album for a March release, but the DTP leader is making sure he takes advantage of every chance he can to promote it. It was recently announced that the southern rapper will join the “E.N.D.” Tour, with pop-hit-makers (and lately album sales kings) the Black Eyed Peas.

Ludacris will kick off the national tour in his own hometown of Atlanta, GA on the 4th of February (Thursday) before he continues on with thirty more city stops, ending in Tocoma on April 10th. In related news, Luda’s new album will hit stores on March 16th and feature Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Eve, Trina as well as cameos from Ne-Yo, Flo Rida and Plies.

T.I. Sued For Stealing Beats

Rapper T.I. could be back in front of a judge, but instead of criminal charges, the rapper is being sued for copyright infringement by an upcoming rapper.

At issue is T.I.’s Grammy Award-winning song “What You Know,” which Nathan Filby aka Motoe Blizzid, claims T.I. stole.

Filby, who is being represented by One LLP, claims the 2006 track sampled portions of a 2004 song he made titled Reverence.

He claims that the track was delivered to a number of industry insiders before reaching a representative at Relentless Management, a company that reportedly works with T.I.

In court documents, One LLP and Filby claimed that the tracks contain the “same harmonic” range and lawyers even presented documents that showed an algorithm that claimed to show the song’s similarities scientifically.

According to reports, Filby seeks a trial by jury and all profits derived from the song, which was featured on T.I.’s hit album King.

T.I. is currently in a halfway house after serving almost 8 months in a low security prison, after he was caught purchasing machine guns and silencers in October of 2008.

John Travolta Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is and Helps Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – John Travolta has flown a jetliner carrying relief supplies into the Haitian capital, along with doctors and ministers from the Church of Scientology.

The 55-year-old actor piloted his own Boeing 707 from Florida with six tons of ready-to-eat military rations and medical supplies for survivors of Haiti’s devastating Jan. 12 earthquake late Monday.

His wife, Kelly Preston, was also aboard.

“We have the ability to actually help make a difference in the situation in Haiti and I just can’t see not using this plane to help,” Travolta said.

Travolta compared the mission to aid efforts following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. “We were there right away, with this airplane, because you know we have the ability and the means to do this so I think you have responsibility on some level to do that.”

Aid groups have been desperate to fly their own planes into the over-stressed airport. U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said Tuesday that at least 800 planes with relief items are on a waiting list for the airport, which can handle only about 130 flights a day due to a lack of space to park planes as they unload.

The aid group Doctors Without Borders has complained that the flight scheduling priorities of U.S. military controllers running the airport delayed the arrival of field hospitals, resulting in some deaths.

More than 150,000 people have already been buried since the magnitude-7 quake, which destroyed entire Port-au-Prince neighborhoods and landmarks and crumbled nearby towns.

Hundreds of thousands of people are living in the streets, with scores of injured wanting for proper medical care.

Travolta and Preston returned to Florida as soon as their supplies and passengers were unloaded.

Obama Steps In Tax Season

President Barack Obama will be turning his attention to the middle class in his upcoming State of the Union address this Wednesday. Among the initiatives he plans to outline are increased child care tax credits, programs to cap student loan payments and assistance for families caring for elderly relatives.
The president said that creating new jobs and reducing unemployment is the “single-most important thing we can do to rebuild the middle class.” “I won’t rest until we’re doing just that,” he said.
But, Obama said, “We also need to reverse the overall erosion in middle-class security, so that when this economy does come back, working Americans are free to pursue their dreams again.”
The White House says the new proposals are aimed at just that — the “sandwich generation” that is now struggling to care for both children and parents. The theme fits into the planned economic message of Obama’s prime-time address to the nation on Wednesday, which promises to provide a sharper focus on jobs and is likely to cover financial regulations, energy, education, immigration and a push to change the political tone in Washington.
Under the president’s proposals, families making under $85,000 a year would see their child care tax credit nearly doubled. Families making under $115,000 would also see at least some increase in their tax credit as well. Obama will also call for the allocation of $100 million to assist families caring for aging relatives by providing help with transportation, adult day care and in-home aids.
The initiatives also focus on savings, requiring employers that don’t offer work-based retirement plans to enroll their employees in a direct deposit retirement account, unless the employee opts out. The cost to employers would be offset by new tax credits, and the administration says the smallest firms would be exempt.
Obama will also call for caps on some student loans, limiting a borrower’s payments to 10 percent of his or her income, and forgiving all remaining debt after 10 years of payment for those in public service work — and 20 years for all others.
It’s great that the Obama administration is taking steps toward helping the middle class, but we wonder how many people will feel they still aren’t doing enough?

R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who was one of the most electric and successful figures in music until a car crash 28 years ago left him in a wheelchair, has died of colon cancer. He was 59.

Pendergrass died Wednesday in suburban Philadelphia, where he had been hospitalized for months.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery."

Before the crash, Pendergrass established a new era of R&B with an explosive, raw voice that symbolized masculinity, passion and the joys and sorrow of romance in songs such as "Close the Door," "It Don't Hurt Now," "Love T.K.O." and other hits that have since become classics.

He was an international superstar and sex symbol. His career was at its apex — and still climbing.

Friend and longtime collaborator Kenny Gamble, of the renowned production duo Gamble & Huff, teamed with Pendergrass on his biggest hits and recalled how the singer was even working on a movie.

But instead of becoming bitter or depressed, Pendergrass created a new identity — that as a role model, Gamble said.Pendergrass, who was born in Philadelphia in 1950, suffered a spinal cord injury in a 1982 car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down — still able to sing but without his signature power. The image of the strong, virile lover was replaced with one that drew sympathy.
